The Promises of God - Day One
Encouragement for Today: The Promises of God
God Cannot Lie
We are living in a time when it’s hard to know what is true. The information presented to us in the media changes daily, and it can make us feel disoriented. But truth is important, and knowing where to find truth is important.
It’s with this in mind that we are launching this series of devotionals titled The Promises of God. Each devotional will explore one of the promises God makes to his people in His word. His promises are true. His people can trust them.
Today we will begin by looking at a fundamental character trait of God – one that lays the foundation for every promise he gives – and that is this: GOD CANNOT LIE.
Let’s begin by reading Numbers 23:19: “God is not a man, that he should lie, not a human, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?”
• How does this scripture separate God from men? What are the contrasts between God and
humans?
• Have you ever had to change your mind about something? An opinion you held? A conclusion you drew? Most of us have. Most of the time we change our minds when we get more or better information about something. What does it say about God that he never has to change his mind?
• What about the next two questions in Numbers 23:19? We understand the answer to both of those questions to be “NO”. What word could you use to describe God since the answer to these questions is “NO”?
God’s truthfulness is expressed in the New Testament as well. Paul in Titus 1:2 writes that “God cannot
lie,” and the writer of Hebrews makes the boldest claim in Hebrews 6:18 when he states that “it is impossible for God to lie.”
• If we believe that scripture is true and authoritative, then what do we have to believe about God according to these 2 verses and Numbers 23:19?
• How does knowing that it is IMPOSSIBLE for God to lie affect the way you view scripture? About what you believe about God’s promises? How does it affect your relationship with God? Friends, God doesn’t just tell the truth, God is truth. Everything God says is trustworthy because it’s true. God will never lie to us or mislead us; he is simply not capable of doing it. Is that comforting? As we dig into some of His promises in scripture, find confidence in the fact that the promises of God are true, and they are true for you, personally. Today, ask God to give you confidence in knowing that his promises are true and that they are for you.
Be blessed, be a blessing.
