The Great Stone Face

Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a famous short story entitled The Great Stone Face. He was writing about a forty foot profile of an old man's face carved out by nature in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. The face became a tourist attraction and the official state emblem. But in May 2003, "The Great Stone Face" broke apart and fell down the mountainside.

The near by residents were greatly dismayed because they said they grew up all their life thinking that someone was watching over them.

Deut. 32:4 speaks of "The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He." Does not this verse suggest that God is our "Rock". We can always depend upon his promises. After all, "The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry." (Ps. 34:15) if you feel like His presence has deserted you perhaps it is you, not Him who has slid down the mountain.

"While I draw this fleeting breath, when my eyes shall close in death, when I rise to worlds unknown, and behold Thee on Thy throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee."
