Read Matthew 5:33-37.

This has always been a passage that stands out as rather odd to me. Does it really matter whether we swear by or on something? Well, clearly it does. Jesus called the people out on it! The main issue here, based on the different examples that Jesus gives, is people including God, or something of God, in their oath. What Jesus is trying to explain is that God is above being sworn by. He is great. He is mighty. He is the Creator of our universe, and his name should not be used so carelessly. Instead, simply say ‘yes’ or ‘no’. That’s not so hard, is it? Although Jesus doesn’t say it outright, I would argue that if you have to rely on God’s name, or something else, to guarantee to someone else that you are not lying or that you plan to follow through with a promise, you have much bigger problems. You probably haven’t been a very trustworthy person. So, just start keeping your promises. And don’t make promises that you can’t keep. If we look to God as an example of this, He has made many promises throughout His Word. And He has kept all of them! He follows through. With His power behind us, we can easily do the same!

Questions:
*Take a moment to journal these questions. Write down your thoughts, questions, and concerns. Then date your entry. One of the coolest things is being able to look back and see how God came through for you.*

  1. Would your friends and the people around you say that you’re trustworthy?

  1. As a christian, why do you think it is important to be trustworthy?

  1. What things do you need to change so that you can be true to your promises? (Hint: this may start with verse 37.)

Prayer: Spend some time praying about the things you journaled. Pray that God would empower you to be a trustworthy friend. Ask that he would allow you to be true to your promises and eliminate gossip or anything else that would keep people from confiding in you. Pray that, as you seek to look like Jesus, He would mold you into a person that reflects His faithfulness.

*Make sure you follow-up with your challenge person! Check in and let them know you have been praying for them.*
