Read Matthew 9:35-38.
It is not a rare thing to see that Jesus is filled with compassion. We have many accounts in stories where Jesus is moved by the situations that people are in. In this case, he has compassion because the religious leaders of the crowds before him have failed them. As we know, the Pharisees, Sadduccees, and High Priests are quite corrupt with the power that they have gained from their positions. They have manipulated God’s Law to serve their own will, and the people of Israel have paid the price. This is what Jesus sees.
What is his response? A call to prayer! This is unique because Jesus gives his disciples, and us by extension, a very specific cause to pray for. He sees these lost people and knows that they need to be led in the right direction, back towards their Creator. This is no different from our world today. Although Christianity has grown to be one of the largest religions in the world, it is full of much division, hypocrisy, and heresy. Many claim Jesus, but few actually follow him (Matthew 7:21-23). Thus, he knows the importance of those that do follow him going out and showing everyone else why it’s worth it! Therefore, don’t just pray that God will send out more faithful Christians to the places where Christ is needed most, pray that you will be sent! While there is the possibility of persecution and rejection, there is, more importantly, the possibility that someone will know who Jesus really is because of you!
Questions:
*Take a moment to journal these questions. Write down your thoughts, questions, and concerns. Then date your entry. One of the coolest things is being able to look back and see how God came through for you.*
Prayer: Spend some time praying about the things you journaled. Thank Jesus for His heart for you. Thank Him for the laborers that He has used in your life to bring you closer to Him. Ask that Jesus would show you what it looks like to be the type of laborer He is calling. Pray that you would be this kind of worker without reservation.

- What do you think are some of the differences between the Pharisees of the time and the laborers Jesus wanted? Things to consider: status, interaction with people, motives.
- What is Jesus’s heart for people in this passage?
- How could you be used as a laborer for Jesus? He says the harvest is plentiful– what does this harvest look like in your life?
