God Our Father
In Scriptures the God of heaven is described in so many different ways. God is all powerful, He is holy, He is Creator. He is eternal, our fortress, our salvation, and compassionate. He is Love. He is Judge, He is spirit and Sovereign. These are but a few of the many ways to describe the God we worship. But the Son of God described God in a way that we can easily understand when He encouraged us to pray, “Our Father in heaven...” (Luke 11:2) And so, most often our prayers begin with those words.
The third Sunday in June in this country is designated “Father’s Day”. And so next Sunday, fathers will be given ties they don’t like and will wear only one obligatory time. They will be taken out to lunch for which they will pay. They will be appreciated by their children to a degree but not as much as their mothers.
I look back at my father and realize why I loved him. He had a ninth grade education. He never earned a lot of money but managed to leave his sons a small inheritance. He was not famous but was respected by his peers. He paid for his sons education. He was a faithful Christian. He loved my Mother. He loved me. He kept me safe. He took me to worship. I can still see him sitting in his barber shop reading his N.T. When he had no customers. He never could explain it like I eventually did but he read it in faith.
So that is why Jesus encouraged us to think of God as “Father”. I am so sorry that some people did not experience a father like I described. You can live a life of bitterness because of it or you can determine to be a father to your children like our heavenly Father. You see, your children will never be impressed with your titles, your wealth, your fame. They will remember the time and the affection you gave them and a love that patiently forgave them. What kind of father will you be remembered as?
